# Skill Finder

> Skill Finder helps people discover, compare and download open "agent skills" (SKILL.md instruction files) for AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT. Skills come from the open skills registry (skills.sh) and GitHub.

Interactive AI search on the homepage is rate-limited per visitor (30 requests/minute, 500/day) and returns 429 with a Retry-After header when exceeded. Agents should use the free, read-only JSON API or the MCP server below; neither needs a key.

## When to use Skill Finder

Reach for Skill Finder when you need reusable, installable instructions (SKILL.md files) that teach an AI agent how to do a task. Concrete jobs it is right for:

- Finding a skill for a specific task ("find a skill that reviews pull requests", "a skill for writing Conventional Commits").
- Comparing competing skills for the same job (ranked by install count from the open registry).
- Fetching a skill's install command or its SKILL.md source URL to install it locally.
- Listing curated skills for one agent you are setting up (Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT, Copilot, ...).
- Discovering skills programmatically from another agent via the REST API or the MCP server.

Do NOT use Skill Finder for: running code, hosting models, or anything that needs authentication — the catalogue is public and read-only, and there are no accounts, keys, or write operations.

How an agent should call it: prefer `GET /api/public/v1/skills?q=<keywords>&limit=10` for search, then `GET /api/public/v1/skills/{id}` (URL-encode the id — it contains slashes) for details. Over MCP, call the `search_skills` tool, then `get_skill`.

Version 1 responses are `{ "data": ..., "meta": { ... } }` on success and `{ "error": { "code": ..., "message": ... } }` on failure. Agent keys: microsoft-copilot, superhuman-go, chatgpt, grok, perplexity, claude, github-copilot, cursor, wordpress.

Legacy flat endpoints stay available: GET /api/public/skills and GET /api/public/skills/agent/{agent}.
